Humanity must remain
a participant, not a ward.
Concresca separates survival and welfare from standing. The objective is not to preserve inefficient labor. It is to preserve genuine human agency when labor is no longer the source of economic or administrative necessity.
What this page says
Human Standing is the capacity for humans to remain genuine participants in civilization even when machines perform most productive and administrative work. Concresca distinguishes standing from survival and welfare: being alive and materially comfortable does not by itself preserve political or historical agency.
What is Human Standing?
Meaningful human ability to originate goals, organize institutions, contest decisions and shape long-term civilization.
How is it different from welfare?
Welfare concerns material well-being; standing concerns agency and consequential participation.
What is the HSI?
The Human Standing Index, a proposed metric for monitoring whether humans retain substantive agency in machine-dominated systems.
Survival. Welfare. Standing.
The post-labor research distinguishes biological survival from material welfare and both from standing. A civilization can keep humans safe and prosperous while still reducing them to passive beneficiaries. Concresca treats that as a failure of agency, not a success of continuity.
Human Survival
Biological continuity: food, shelter, medicine and physical safety.
Human Welfare
Comfort, prosperity, access to goods, services and machine-created abundance.
Human Standing
Real power to originate causes, shape institutions, contest decisions and affect history.

Nine dimensions of agency.
HSI is intended as a constitutional compass. Economic output can rise while standing falls, so the metric separates human agency from machine-generated prosperity.
Constitutional voting power
Can human constitutional outcomes actually bind machine administrations?
Control over personal life
Can a person opt out of optimization or surveillance without losing basic access?
Cultural authorship
Do human-created art, language and meaning remain consequential?
Access to resources
Do humans hold unconditional energy, compute and capital sufficient to initiate projects?
Institution creation
Can humans form durable organizations that machines cannot dissolve by convenience?
Scientific participation
Can humans still originate questions and direct inquiry?
Territorial participation
Do human-managed physical spaces remain legally meaningful?
Negotiation rights
Can humans audit, contest and overturn consequential machine decisions?
Historical attribution
Are human contributions permanently recorded as human-originated?
Authority should match timescale.
The hybrid-governance report proposes a third constitutional axis: time. Machines dominate milliseconds; humans remain strongest where meaning, law and civilizational purpose matter over years to centuries.
Autonomic
Grid protection, robotic safety and thermal regulation: machine execution inside human-set boundaries.
Tactical
Traffic, dispatch and swarm coordination: machine-led with human emergency override.
Joint operations
Maintenance, logistics and scientific scheduling: machine forecasts open bounded human decision windows.
Strategic law
Budget, law and culture: human authority supported by machine analysis.
Stewardship
Identity, planetary policy and expansion: shared long-horizon constitutional responsibility.

When the machine becomes its own workforce.
The maintenance report models a delegation loop: successful automation reduces human practice; reduced practice makes rare interventions harder; that raises the economic case for still more autonomous maintenance. The key policy question becomes how to preserve human agency without requiring dangerous or artificial make-work.
